Grade 4 Outcomes

Grade 4 children talk and think about how and what they are learning. They learn to check their progress as they work toward their language learning goals.

In Grade 4, your child learns to:
  • use past experiences and what he or she knows about books, stories and language to figure out meaning;
  • explore new ways to learn, think and communicate about what he or she reads, hears and watches;
  • choose topics, ask good questions, and use a plan for a research project;
  • make clear and interesting oral, written and visual presentations, keeping in mind the reason for the presentation and who will be listening, reading or watching;
  • use a variety of information sources such as people, libraries, maps, technology and websites to answer his or her questions and find new information;
  • check for complete sentences, punctuation and spelling.
In Grade 4, children learn to participate co-operatively in large and small groups. They also learn that the kind of language we use depends on the situation and with whom we are communicating.

Reading at Home

For homework, students are expected to read at least 20 minutes daily. Students can read a book that they have chosen from the classroom or school library and from the leveled book set in the classroom. They can also log onto Raz Kids.

Literature Circles

Term 1 book list:
  1. Drummer Boy
  2. The Bear Son
  3. Pocketful of Fur
  4. Song Lei in a New Land
  5. Parker Shanahan, Survivor Against All Odds
How it works:
  1. Each novel set runs each term (October-December, January-March and April-June).
  2. Students choose the books that they want to read. They read at their own pace during our Literature Circles period. Books may also be taken home but must be returned daily. By the end of the term some students may finish all of the books and some may read 1 or two books. They must finish at least one novel!
  3. Students will complete a Reading Response entry a couple of times a week to demonstrate their ability to make connections (text-to-self, text-to-text and text-to-world). Assignments are completed in class or homework if not done by the end of the week.
  4. Students meet for Book Talks.
